Why Is My Ceiling Fan So Loud?

Posted on August 14th, 2020 by Jupiter Tequesta

A rattling ceiling fan is definitely cause for concern. It could mean a number of things, like a few screws being unsecured for example. Your ceiling fan is meant to make your life easier and cooler, it’s not supposed to give you headaches. Here are some of the top reasons why your ceiling fan is loud, and how to take care of it.

Loose Screws

That rattling noise can be a direct result of some screws moving around, as they are not fastened securely. When screws are loose, then the blades connected can also be loose. This could lead to the blades flying off and causing damage to your home and could endanger your family.

What can you do? Check every area of your fan to make sure there are no detached screws. Luckily, it’s an easy fix. Pick up a trust screwdriver in the right size and secure the screws you are worried about.

Dimmer Controls

A light humming might not always be annoying, but when you are trying to get some sleep it can be the one sound keeping you awake. If you have a dimmer control for the light in your ceiling fan that also controls the fan speed, that could be your biggest issue. Oftentimes those fixtures are not made to control fan speed properly, causing the humming from your confused ceiling fan.

What can you do? Replace your dimmer controller with a standard speed control instead. Your fan should always be paired with the equipment it works the best with.

Remotes

If you are using a remote for your fan that has a bad receiver, it might not always connect when it should. This lack of connection can cause that humming in your fan since it is fighting to try and keep up with the faulty signal it’s receiving.

What can you do? Simply opt out the receiver for connecting your ceiling fan to your power source directly. If the humming sound stops after you try this, then you’ll know that was your issue.
