What Size Is My Air Conditioner?
When it comes to central air systems, it’s kind of like the story of “Goldilocks and the Three Bears.” That is, it’s important that you get the size just right. Too small and you’ll wear your unit out, too big and you sacrifice comfort.
If you already have an air conditioner, you may be wondering how to determine its size. Follow these steps to do just that:
1. Locate the label
Modern day air conditioning units have a label that make it easy to figure out your system’s capacity. It’s within the model number (M/N)! Many manufacturers will input the unit’s capacity in BTU/hour within this area.
2. What to pay attention to
The first part of the model number will give you the air conditioner’s efficiency rating. Just past that, you’ll find the nominal capacity in BTU/hr.
3. Do the math
Every 12,000 BTU/hr is equal to about one ton of air conditioner capacity. Therefore, you just have to do some simple math to determine your AC’s capacity in tons. Not too bad, huh?
