What Not to Put Down the Drain
Far too many people look at the sink as a trash can. But what you put down the drain can clog pipes and even pollute bodies of water. Avoid tossing any of the following things into the sink:
1. Grease, fat and oil
There might be nothing more delicious than crispy, fried bacon, right? Unfortunately, our drains would disagree. Pouring all that grease into your pipes has its consequences: According to Business Insider, “The fats in the grease and oil from your kitchen mix with the other chemicals in the sewers and form nasty conglomerations of chemicals that can build up and block the pipes that take our dirty water to the wastewater treatment plant.” And it’s not just bacon that causes problems; all fats and oils should be thrown in the trash, not the drain.
2. Toxic chemicals
Most of us wouldn’t knowingly pour dangerous chemicals down the drain, but it probably happens more frequently than you realize. That’s because many common household products — like laundry detergent and pesticides — contain toxins that can “wreak havoc on fragile ecosystems once they leave your local sewage treatment plant,” warns Green Home. Drop these items off at a local waste center, or better yet, opt for eco-friendly cleaners!
3. Fibrous fruits and vegetables
It’s easy for scraps from stringy fruits and veggies to get caught in your pipes, leading to slow drains and clogs. When preparing meals, dispose of peels and pits in the garbage. Otherwise, you could end up with a nasty blockage in no time at all.
If you do accidentally put any of these things down the drain, don’t panic. Even the most stubborn clogs have nothing on the expert drain cleaning team at Jupiter-Tequesta Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electric. Read about our array of sewer and drain cleaning services here.
