What is a Fatberg?
While Fatberg may sound like a new Netflix release, its origins are a little frightening. The term fatberg refers to the grease monsters that are creating significant problems in sewer systems around the world. These blobs are costing cities thousands of dollars every year because they get stuck in the sewage pipes.
What’s In A Fatberg?
A fatberg is comprised of these items:
- Feminine products
- Baby wipes
When the grease meets up with the other waste items, they begin to form a giant ball that only increases as it picks up more trash in the sewers.
How Did These Items Get Into Sewers?
Unfortunately, not everyone follows the rules when it comes to proper disposal of garbage. Many restaurants have the terrible habit of pouring grease down the sink, and plenty of people are flushing tampons and other items that should be thrown in the garbage. Baby wipes are the biggest offender and make up a significant percentage of the ever-growing fatbergs.
Keeping Your Plumbing Fatberg Free
If you want to keep your plumbing system running smoothly, then never put anything down the drain other than your biological waste and toilet paper. Grease should never be dumped down the sink unless you want to create your very own Fatberg in the pipes. We recommend pouring hot oil into a can and throwing it in the garbage once it’s cooled down.
Even if you’ve been following all the rules, sometimes pipes get blocked no matter how careful you are. Contact us for clogged pipes, leaks, and blocked drains. Our experienced technicians are trained to handle your worst plumbing problems quickly and efficiently.
