What Does SEER Stand For?
Why is SEER Important?
If you’re not familiar with the term, SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. It measures your air conditioner’s ability to cool a room, as well as the amount of electricity it takes to do the job. Keep reading to learn what these numbers mean for your HVAC unit.
What Number to Look For
Every energy-using appliance in your home is given a SEER rating by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The higher the number, the more efficient the air conditioning unit is. The efficiency of your unit matters because:
- The more efficient it is, the less power it’ll use.
- Using less power means lower energy bills.
- You could save enough money in one year to go on a short family vacation!
In January 2015, a rule went into effect that all air conditioners must have a minimum SEER rating of 13. Many older homes, however, have air conditioners with SEER ratings of 9 or 10.
Think about this: upgrading from a 9 to a 13 can potentially save you $300 a year. There’s your weekend vay-cay for the family!
