Water Heater Efficiency Guide
Is it time you upgraded that old water heater? If so, you have a big decision to make. The good news is that there are a lot of options available to you.
Don’t waste your time scouring the web for reviews. We’ve compiled everything you need to know about modern water heaters right here:
Size matters. First and foremost, figure out what size water heater is right for your family. It’s important that you find one that will meet your family’s demand for hot water. Use this HGTV guide for help finding the ideal size and efficiency.
Consider fuel type. How will you power your water heater? There’s no cheapest fuel type across the board, because costs will largely depend on availability in your area. Below, the US Department of Energy explains:
One type of water heater may use a fuel type more efficiently than another type of water heater. For example, an electric heat pump water heater typically is more energy efficient than an electric conventional storage water heater. Also, an electric heat pump water heater might have lower energy costs because of its higher efficiency than a gas-fired conventional storage water heater, even though local natural gas costs might be lower than the electricity rates.

Look at energy efficiency.
Every water heater has an energy factor (EF) that helps consumers choose based on energy efficiency. Here’s what the rating looks at:
- Recovery efficiency — How efficiently a water heater transfers heat to the water
- Standby losses — The rate at which heat is lost from a water heater’s stored water
- Cycling losses — How much heat is lost as water circulates throughout a water heater
