Top Tips for DIY Drain Cleaning

Posted on December 7th, 2015 by Jupiter Tequesta

The experts of Jupiter-Tequesta Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electric are here for all of your plumbing needs. But if you’re itching for a do-it-yourself (DIY) project, drain cleaning is fairly simple.

Stick to the following tips to remove clogs and keep your drains in tip-top shape:

1. Avoid commercial drain cleaners. These chemical-laden products are often ineffective. Plus, they can really damage your pipes! You’re better off skipping making your own drain cleaner with ingredients found around the house.

2. Use vinegar and baking soda. This all-natural concoction is especially effective in removing grease. Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda into the drain, then add 1/2 cup of vinegar. You’ll notice quite a bit of fizz — close the drain to keep the solution inside. Let sit for a half hour, and then flush with hot water.

3. Boil water. Seriously, it’s that easy. Boil as much water as you can, and slowly pour it into the clogged drain in two or three stages. This allows the hot water to work through the clog in between each pour.

4. Pull out your trusty plunger. That’s right, plungers aren’t just for toilets! Fill the sink in question with about 3 inches of water. This will help ensure your plunger to get a good seal around the drain. Plunge until water starts swirling down the drain.

If these DIY methods don’t seem to do the trick, don’t fret. We offer same-day sewer and drain work in Palm Beach and Martin counties. Our plumbers can take care of whatever drain issue you’re experiencing. Give us a call:
