Top Electrical Safety Tips

Posted on September 2nd, 2015 by Jupiter Tequesta

About 81,000 electrical system fires spark every year, and more than 25 percent of them are caused by electrical cords and temporary wiring. These types of fires can and should be prevented! Follow the following tips to keep your home and family safe:

Extension cords

  • Avoid using extension cords in place of repairing building wiring
  • Look for any bad connectors, broken insulation or or missing pieces
  • Don’t run extension cords between rooms, be it through a wall, over a beam, around a corner or through a doorway
  • Look for surge protected power strips

Temporary cables

  • Never replace building wiring with temporary or flexible wiring
  • Reserve use of temporary wiring for only maintenance, repair and demolition
  • Don’t use temporary cables for holiday decor for more than 90 days
  • Keep temporary wires away from sharp edges, excess heat and direct sunlight

Other electrical safety tips

  • Check household appliances for frayed cords and damaged connections
  • Label each circuit breaker, fuse, or switch within your panel board
  • Cover up all unused electrical outlets with proper enclosures and fittings
