Follow these tips:

  • Have your clothes dryer installed, inspected and serviced by a professional
  • Never use your dryer without a lint filter
  • Always clean the lint filter before and after using your dryer
  • Don’t leave the dryer running if you’re going out or heading to bed
  • Clean behind your dryer, where lint tends to build up unnoticed
  • Inspect the clothes dryer’s exhaust vent for damage and clogs
  • Check the outdoor vent to ensure its covering opens when dryer is in-use
  • Avoid overloading your dryer
  • Don’t cover the wall damper with a cloth or wire screen, both of which tend to collect lint
  • Never dry clothes or products containing foam, rubber or plastic
  • Do not use your dryer for items that may have come into contact with flammable materials like alcohol or gasoline
  • Replace old-fashioned dryer vents (coiled-wire or plastic) with a rigid metal duct
  • If you own a gas-powered clothes dryer, have it inspected annually for leaks
  • Clear the space around your dryer
  • Unplug or disconnect the clothes dryer before leaving for vacation
