An Essential Guide to Layering Your Lighting
The Three Main Types of Lighting
To some, it may seem like all lighting is the same, while serving the same exact purpose. While it’s true that all lighting helps to illuminate our homes, these three styles of lighting help to do that is very different, specific ways.
Think of ambient lighting as the canvas in which you paint your lighting picture. This lighting style is the basic illumination of your home, which is needed in order for you to move around any room safely. In fact, when you flick on the main switch in your living space, you’re most likely switching on this style of lighting.
Ambient lighting doesn’t come from a single source, such as a pendant light; ambient light may include:
- Floor lamps
- Recess lights
Known as ‘directional lighting’, accent lighting is mainly aesthetic purposes. This lighting style allows you to highlight different features within a room, such as fireplaces or pictures.
Some ways you may choose to install accent lighting include:
- Smaller recess lights
- Wall sconces
Usually, accent lights should be about three times stronger than your ambient lighting, to properly accentuate the item of your choice.
For practical illumination, rely on task lighting to get the job done. This style of lighting allows you to perform specific activities under light without using a giant overhead fixture for the entire space. Examples of task lighting include:
- Desk or bedside table lamps
- Vanity lights in your bathroom
- Pendant lights in the kitchen
Task lighting is practical, but it can also be for design. Use task lighting, combined with ambient and accent lighting, for the best atmosphere.
