Landscape Lighting for Security
It is very important to feel safe and secure in your own home. By installing outdoor lighting you’re not only making your home more beautiful, but you are also helping deter vandalism and home invasion. Plus, landscape lighting makes your property safer for you and your guests by brightening up locations that could be dangerous in the dark. Here are a few things to consider before installing outdoor security lighting.
Mounting Location & Placement
When choosing a location for your lights consider mounting them on tall poles or on your home. This will help illuminate a larger area and it will prevent tampering. Make sure your lights are illuminating your property but are not shining through your neighbors’ windows.
Protection
You should keep your lights protected so they do not get tampered with. In addition to placing them high, try covering your lights with a plastic guard or metal mesh cage.
Type
HPS (High Pressure Sodium) bulbs emit a yellow or orange light while metal halide bulbs emit a light that is more blue or white. HPS bulbs are less glaring which makes it easier to identify people and objects, but colors are not well defined under these lights. If color recognition is important then you should use metal halide bulbs.
Security lighting may become less effective if it is overused. Lights that are on all night may become ignored so consider getting lights that are motion sensored. This will help draw attention to the activity that is occurring.
Just because its main purpose is security does not mean that lighting can’t give your home character. Using different types of lighting fixtures can also make your home look beautiful.
