Many homeowners add outdoor lighting to their property to enhance its look and increase safety and security. You may want to choose energy-efficient options — not just to reduce energy costs, but also to help protect the environment.

1. Choose compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The US Department of Energy recommends these types of fixtures because they can help you save a lot of energy. “Most bare spiral CFLs can be used in enclosed fixtures that protect them from the weather,” the department advises. When shopping around, keep an eye out for the ENERGY STAR label.

2. Find low-voltage fixtures. As technology continues to evolve, outdoor lighting has become more affordable. Look for low-voltage fixtures; they use up to one-third of the energy of 12-volt security lighting systems.

3. Don’t overdo it. You may be tempted to really light up the outside of your house. Be careful not to overdo it! Too much light can create light pollution, making it difficult to sleep at night and annoying your neighbors. More importantly, outdoor light pollution wastes energy!
