It’s Fix a Leak Week!
Did you know that household leaks can waste more than 1 trillion gallons of water each year?
Although faucet drips and leaky shower heads may seem insignificant, this water waste can truly add up over time. This week, we remind homeowners to take a few minutes out of their day to check their home plumbing for Fix a Leak Week!
Where should you begin?
- Analyze Your Water Bill – Check last month’s utility bill and compare it to your bill for January. If you have a see spikes in water usage or your water use exceeds 12,000 gallons, it’s likely that you have a plumbing leak.
- Find Your Water Meter – Your water hear is likely outside of your home either in the front or near the curb (but it may be in your basement, depending on your home set up). Take a reading during a period when no water is being used. If the meter does not give the same reading two hours later, you probably have a leak.
- Test Your Toilet – With just a few drops of food coloring, you can check to see if your toilet is leaking. Place a few drops of food coloring into the tank on the back of your toilet. Let it sit for about ten minutes. If you notice the color leaking into the toilet bowl, you have a leak. Make sure you flush after to avoid staining — and then give us a call to replace your toilet flapper.
- Listen for Drips – Listen for drips from your faucet, shower head, tub, under your sink and your toilet. These areas are common areas for water leaks and they’re simple to fix.
Take a look at this checklist from the Environmental Protection Agency for a complete list of where you should look in your home for leaks.
