How to Cool Your House for Less

iStock_000025926943_MediumKeeping your home cool on hot summer days can get expensive.  Fortunately, there are ways to help improve the efficiency of your home air conditioning system, saving you money on your monthly utility bills.  Here are a few tips to help you cool your home for less.

Cooling Tips:

  • Turn On Your Fan – Ceiling fans provide more than a breeze.  They can actually help disperse cool, air conditioned air throughout your home.
  • Keep the Blinds/Curtains Closed – Keep your blinds or curtains closed while you are at work during the day.  This will help block the heat from the sun’s rays and keep your home cooler.
  • Add Home Insulation – How well insulated is your home?  Adding more insulation to your home attic or ceiling will keep cold air from escaping.  Be sure to seal any areas where hot air can leak into your home (think around your doors and windows)!
  • Make Sure Your Air Conditioning Unit is the Right Size – The efficiency of your air conditioner depends on the size of the room, the electrical wattage and the energy output.  If your air conditioning unit is older, it might be time to upgrade to a more energy-efficient Energy Star model.   These units can be at least 10% more efficient than other air conditioning units.
