How to Get the Most Out of Your AC

Posted on July 3rd, 2015 by Jupiter Tequesta

If you live in or around West Palm Beach, you probably crank up the air conditioning every day. But how can you stay cool without spending an arm and a leg on energy costs? The key to getting the most out of your AC is maintenance and care.

Change the cooling coil. A dirty coil will make your air conditioner run longer and work harder to cool your home. The result? A unit that won’t last very long and higher energy bills. Try using a vacuum cleaner brush to clean it off. If that doesn’t work, you’ll need a replacement coil.

Clean the filter. During the dog days of summer, you might have to clean or change your AC’s filter monthly. Again, keeping the filter clean will prevent your system from overworking, which can save you money.

Schedule regular inspections. You should have your air conditioner inspected and tuned at the beginning of summer. Join Jupiter-Tequesta Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electric’s Club Membership, and you’ll get two tune-ups per year!

Give your compressor some space. “For those with central systems, there should be 2 to 3 feet of space between the compressor outside the home and other objects, like plants and the building itself, to make sure there’s sufficient air flow,” advises USA Today. However, it’s important to give it some shade too.

Seal up your home. Even small cracks and leaks can be costly. Don’t let all that cooled air leave your home! Make sure windows and doors are tightly sealed.
