Drain Cleaning Do’s and Don’ts

Sink With Waterdrops, Water Jet And Chrome Drain StrainerClogged drains are a common, but frustrating, home plumbing problem. Fortunately, there are ways to help keep your drains clean and prevent these problems in the future. Here are a few do’s and don’ts to keep in mind.

Drain Cleaning Do’s and Don’ts

  • Clean Your Garbage Disposal With Ice Cubes – Putting ice cubes down your garbage disposal is a great way to clean the blades and freshen up the sink. Add lemon slices the ice cubes for an extra fresh scent.
  • Run Hot Water – Run hot water down your disposal with baking soda to keep the garbage disposal unit clean.
  • Run Your Garbage Disposal Regularly – Using your garbage disposal on a regular basis helps keep it clean and prevents it from rusting.

  • Use Liquid Drain Cleaners –The harsh chemicals in liquid drain cleaners can damage your plumbing pipes.  Not to mention they may not even work to clear your line effectively.
  • Put Bones Down Your Disposal – Bones from wings and ribs can damage your garbage disposal blades. Throw them away instead of putting them down the disposal.
  • Dispose of Grease – Grease may look like a liquid, but grease will harden when cool, sticking to the sides of your plumbing pipes.
