DIY Tips for Unclogging a Toilet

Posted on June 8th, 2015 by Jupiter Tequesta

Put down the chemical drain cleaner! There are better ways to get your toilet up and running again. We’ve compiled some of the best DIY tips for unclogging a toilet from The Family Handyman, DIY Network and LifeHacker:

Use your trusty plunger. Make sure it has “an extension flange on the rubber bell-shaped end,” advises The Family Handyman. The design is meant to fit toilets, and will therefore better unplug the toilet.

DIY Tips for Unclogging a Toilet

Pick up a snake. Head to your local hardware store and purchase a snake, aka a toilet auger. DIY Network reports that it shouldn’t cost more than $50. Push the snake through the throat of the toilet, and extend it into the drain pipe. When you feel the auger approaching the clog, give it some extra tension to create a hole.

Make your own toilet bomb. This tip from LifeHacker might be the easiest (and cleanest). You’ll need the following ingredients to put together a tried and true toilet tablet:

  • 2 cups of baking soda
  • 1/4 cup of Epsom salts
  • 8-9 tablespoons of dish washing liquid
  • Muffin tin and liners

Combine the baking soda and Epsom salts and remove any clumps. Add the dish washing liquid one tablespoon at a time. Line your muffin tin, fill each liner, and pack it down firmly. Allow it to dry and rest overnight, and drop it into the toilet any time you have a slow drain or clog!
