AC Maintenance & Preventing Breakdowns

Posted on December 1st, 2015 by Jupiter Tequesta

Without proper care, your air conditioner will inevitably break down. Most homeowners are not air conditioning experts, and therefore may not know how to perform preventative maintenance.

The experts of Jupiter-Tequesta Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electric are here to help! Follow these tips to prevent breakdowns:

1. Clean your unit’s condenser. Gently vacuum the condenser fins. These metallic blades get dirty fairly easily because they help suck in dust, pollen and dead plant life. Cleaning this area regularly will help keep your system as efficient as possible.

2. Change or clean your air conditioner’s filters. It may be the most importance maintenance task of all — and it’s super easy! The US Department of Energy explains: “Clogged, dirty filters block normal airflow and reduce a system’s efficiency significantly.” In central air systems, filters are usually located on the return duct.

3. Brush off the evaporator. This part can be tricky to get to. Take off the insulation from in front of the plenum and remove all screws from the AC access plate in order to access the evaporator. Then, use a stiff brush to clean the coils of dust and dirt.

If you don’t feel comfortable performing these air conditioning maintenance tasks on your own, contact us today. Our cooling technicians can handle all home comfort demands and emergency situations in the same day!
