3 Home Smells You Don’t Want to Ignore
Your home could be filled with a variety of odor and smells, some you might even blame on the dog, but some that you should never ignore. Though you might know the smell of when your garbage needs to be taken out, are you aware of the scent of a possible gas leak? Here are the three primary odors, no homeowner should ignore
1. A Musty Scent
If you notice a sudden stench of must, the problem could be mold or mildew. If the smell occurs mostly when you turn up your air vents, they could be the source of the problem. Mold can be dangerous to your health and should never be cleaned without the help of a professional. If you notice in one room over another, there could be a water leak that also will need to be identified and fixed ASAP.
2. Rotten Eggs
If you notice a sudden stench of rotten eggs, the most common causes are often a natural gas leak or gas escaping from your sewer. Though gas is odorless, utility companies add a substance to provide strong stench for your protection. If the smell is strong, you’ll want to leave home, and call 911 immediately. Do not touch any electrical items and avoid matches or lighters as gas is very flammable.
If the smell is coming from your bathroom or sink, and faint or only on occasion, you’ll want a plumber to come to find the cause.
3. The Smell of Dirty Socks
A dirty sock smell, also known as dirty sock syndrome, is often a sign that mold is loving in your A/C unit. When mold and bacteria grow on the indoor coils of your system, it can put out a smell that is similar to what many consider the smell of dirty gym socks. Contact a professional HVAC technician if you believe this could be the case in your home.
