What Causes Electrical Sparks?
When an electrical outlet begins to buzz or spark, it’s important that you act fast. Otherwise, you could end up with an electrical fire — a scary prospect for any homeowner. But before you can correct the issue, you need to understand what’s causing it.
Here are three common causes of electrical sparks:
1. A problem with the contact blades
Oftentimes an electrical outlet will spark due to worn-out contact blades. These blades are designed to hold the prongs of an electrical plug. When they start to deteriorate, contact between the blades and the plug is compromised, resulting in a buzzing noise or spark.
2. Loose wires
A loose wire at the terminal screw connector can also cause electrical sparks. As you plug in a device, the wire will shift, resulting in a spark. It’s also possible that the wire has been scorched or damaged, and requires stripping and re-installation.
3. Faulty connections
It’s possible that an electrical spark has nothing to do with the outlet, but rather a bad connection inside the outlet box. All connections need to be tight, and all wires must be properly insulated.
