Storm-guard your home. It’s important to fix every inch of your home before a storm. For instance, lock up any outdoor furnishings, clean out your gutters, and schedule any other home repairs. You should also consider purchasing window covers or storm shutters and hiring a professional to caulk your doors and windows.

Safety-proof your landscaping. Your outdoor landscaping is just as vulnerable to a storm as the inside of your home is. Hire help to trim and tie down your trees and shrubs and replace your gravel with shredded bark — this will help prevent any damages as the wind blows.

Assess your insurance coverage. Home insurance policies vary. So, depending on where you live, you may or may not have wind damage apart of your package. If not, call your insurance to purchase a separate wind policy — don’t wait until a storm is approaching!

  • This is also the perfect time to decide if you want to purchase flood insurance (not include under homeowners insurance). If your home is in a flood zone, you’re required to buy flood insurance. However, you may need it even outside the designated food areas.
