5 Home Plumbing Myths Debunked

Posted on February 26th, 2015 by Jupiter Tequesta

Here’s the thing about the Internet: Not everything you read is true. This is especially true when it comes to plumbing “advice.” We at Jupiter-Tequesta Air Conditioning Plumbing & Electric don’t want you to fall prey to misconceptions when it comes to your home or office’s plumbing. Thus, we present to you five home plumbing myths debunked:

MYTH #1: Plumbing fixtures can be cleaned with soap and water.

Not only is hand soap inadequate for some surfaces (like your toilet bowl), but it can even damage them. Plumbing fixtures made of brass, for instance, need to be treated with a gentle cleaner to avoid scratching the finish.

MYTH #2: Flushable wipes really are flushable.

This is just not true, contrary to what marketers would have you believe. Unfortunately, “flushable” wipes don’t break down as easily as toilet paper, and tend to cause serious clogs. Do not flush these wipes down the toilet!

MYTH #3: Minor leaks can be dealt with later.

Water Tap

Some people think that leaky faucets aren’t a real plumbing issue. Those people are wrong. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), “A leaky faucet that drips at the rate of one drip per second can waste more than 3,000 gallons per year.” Contact Jupiter-Tequesta Air Conditioning Plumbing & Electric to have it fixed immediately.

MYTH #4: Low water pressure is inevitable.

Speaking of leaks, if your home’s water pressure seems to have decreased as of late, don’t ignore it. It could be a sign of leaky pipes! Call in a professional as soon as possible to address the issue and determine the cause.

MYTH #5: There’s no way to prevent a clog.

Of course clogs are avoidable! Pay attention to what you’re flushing down the toilet and tossing down the drain. Certain items should always been thrown out in the trash as opposed to in your pipes:

  • Hair
  • Grease
  • Food
  • Paper Towels
  • Cotton Balls
  • Chemicals
